My Story with Skill Building
Skill-building wasn’t always my foundation. Growing up, I struggled with self-confidence and couldn’t envision a clear path forward. But everything changed when I discovered my love for learning while traveling and picking up new languages. My curiosity exploded, and I began exploring new skills—from juggling to drawing and more. Each step forward added to my life in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
Eventually, I stumbled into personal development, and that’s when things really shifted. I realised I could literally learn anything —so I started learning skills like communication, improving my self-confidence, even designing my life purpose. This revelation transformed learning into a lifestyle and a way of overcoming all kinds of challenges.
As I found my purpose, I learned new skills to support it: visualisation, business-building, marketing. Now, every challenge I encounter is an invitation to learn and grow. And I’ve developed a model to help make this perspective practical:
The GO-META Model
To help make this process actionable, I developed the GO-META Model—a way to break down any challenge into skill-building steps. You can even download a Notion template to get started. Here’s the model in a nutshell:
- G – Goal: Define your ultimate outcome or vision. Start with where you want to end up.
- O – Objective: Break this down into concrete, measurable goals.
- M – Map Out the Skill: Identify all components of the skill. Focus on the key elements that will deliver the majority of results.
- E – Extract the Essence: Prioritize the sub-skills that make the biggest impact first.
- T – Tailor a Training Plan: Sequence your components in the most effective order. Aim for small wins early on to build momentum.
- A – Act on Accountability: Commit to your goals. Find a partner, set stakes, and keep yourself accountable.
Using this model, you can transform any challenge into a series of manageable, learnable steps. It’s a simple approach that keeps you focused and empowered as you build new capabilities.
Why Skill Building is Essential
For me, skill building isn’t just about gathering knowledge—it’s about evolving. It’s the key to sustainable success because it’s a gateway to adaptability. The world constantly throws new challenges our way, whether it’s technological shifts, social changes, or personal growth demands. Each of these requires us to learn new skills to keep pace and make an impact.
Learning empowers us to stay on top and be in the drivers sear of your life. That is why my Video-Blog on Meta-Skills focuses on learning to learn. Skill building transforms every challenge into an opportunity for growth, and every problem becomes a chance to refine ourselves. It’s the cornerstone of resilience, and it gives us the power to keep moving forward even in the most uncertain times.
On a larger scale, I think skill building is essential for humanity. Our current global crises require us to step into new states of awareness. While people often talk about the need to “evolve” collectively, I believe skill building is the practical map for achieving this. It’s through learning and skill development that we can change ourselves and, ultimately, contribute to real collective change.
